Google’s guidelines say a good slug is concise, simple to understand and contains relevant keywords. URL slugs are often quite long, as they are generated by the page title/headline.
To optimize your slug:
- Include your keyword or key phrase.
- Leave out ‘function words’ like “a”, “the” and “and”.
- Use lowercase letters only.
- URL slugs should be permanent – don’t change after publishing.
- Not too short or vague. URL slugs can’t be duplicated – they each need to be specific to the page.
To edit your post slug:
- Go to post settings
- Click on the URL
- Edit the slug in the permalink field.
- Exit the edit URL box (it will add the dashes in between the words automatically).
